For me, a degree in creative writing would not be a waste of time. Through our Writing Arts program and the various creative writing professors I have had I have expanded my writing in ways that I would have not if I was not in this program. I know that if I was left to do writing on my own and was not required to, I would have probably not created anything that I have done before. Clearly, I am the type of person who needs to be nudged to get something done and by pursuing a degree in this field helps me in that way.
I have also met a lot of wonderful people in the Writing Arts department here. Professors that have forced me out of my comfort zone and that have pushed me to be a better writer. Being in their classes and doing their classwork/prompts has made me come up with pieces that I would never have thought of on my own.
Another big plus of a creative writing degree is your classmates. They are all here for the same purpose- to write. You all want to be successful and are all willing to lend a hand. These people are your classmates, critics, and also friends. I sometimes exchange work with friends outside of class to see how they feel about it or where I could improve. Having a multitude of different people reading your work helps you see what you are successful at and what you can work on.
Overall, a degree in creative writing may not compare to a degree in biology, but it is still important. Professors and classmates alike offer insight and help you on your journey to becoming a writ
